What is a Hackathon?

A hackathon is an exciting and collaborative event where people come together to create innovative solutions, build new technology, and learn through hands-on experience—all within a limited amount of time, typically 24 to 48 hours. It’s like a creative marathon, but instead of running, participants “hack” or build projects using their coding, design, and problem-solving skills.

At Hack the Valley 2025: Frostbyte Edition, high school students have the chance to work in teams, brainstorm ideas, and develop projects such as apps, websites, robotics, or other tech innovations. Throughout the event, they’ll receive support and mentorship from experienced professionals and can attend workshops to learn new skills.

Opportunity

For students, a hackathon is a unique opportunity to:

  • Learn and Grow: Gain real-world coding and tech experience.
  • Collaborate: Work alongside peers to solve challenges and develop creative projects.
  • Compete and Have Fun: Showcase your skills for the chance to win prizes and earn recognition.
  • Connect: Meet new friends, mentors, and industry leaders who share a passion for technology.

For parents, a hackathon is a safe, structured environment where students can channel their creativity, explore new interests in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), and build confidence in their abilities. It’s an event that not only fosters learning but also encourages teamwork, communication, and innovative thinking.

How can I participate?

At Hack the Valley 2025: Frostbyte Edition, there are multiple ways to get involved, whether you’re a student eager to compete, someone looking to learn, a mentor wanting to share knowledge, or an organization that wants to support young innovators. Here’s how you can be part of this exciting event:

1. Participate as a Hacker

Are you ready to challenge yourself and build something amazing?

  • Who is a Hacker? A Hacker is a high school student looking to compete by creating innovative tech projects. Working solo or in a team, Hackers will have the opportunity to develop applications, design robotics, build games, or tackle challenges based on various themes. Throughout the event, Hackers will showcase their problem-solving, coding, and collaboration skills, with the chance to win prizes and recognition.
  • Why join as a Hacker? If you’re someone who thrives on competition, creativity, and the thrill of bringing ideas to life, this path is for you.

2. Participate as a Camper

Want to learn without the competition? Join as a Camper!

  • Who is a Camper? A Camper is a student interested in attending hands-on workshops to explore and learn about various tech topics, without competing. Campers will have access to sessions covering coding, robotics, game development, web development, mobile app creation, and more. These workshops are led by industry experts and designed to introduce new skills in a supportive, fun environment.
  • Why join as a Camper? If you’re curious about technology and want to learn and experiment at your own pace, being a Camper is the perfect way to start.

3. Participate as a Mentor

Do you have experience in tech and a passion for teaching? Become a Mentor!

  • Who is a Mentor? A Mentor is a tech professional, educator, or experienced enthusiast who volunteers to guide and inspire students during the event. Mentors can lead workshops, provide feedback on projects, or assist Hackers and Campers as they work through challenges.
  • Why join as a Mentor? Mentoring is a fulfilling way to share your expertise, give back to the community, and empower the next generation of tech leaders. Your insights can make a lasting impact on a student’s learning experience.

4. Participate as a Sponsor

Want to support the next wave of tech talent? Become a Sponsor!

  • Who is a Sponsor? A Sponsor can be a tech company, educational institution, or local business interested in supporting the event financially or by setting up a booth to engage with students. Sponsors help make the event possible and can showcase their commitment to education, innovation, and community involvement. They can also interact directly with participants, offering guidance, networking opportunities, and career insights.
  • Why join as a Sponsor? Sponsoring Hack the Valley 2025 not only benefits students by enriching their learning environment but also offers you a unique opportunity to connect with talented future graduates and tech enthusiasts. Whether you provide financial support, tech resources, or present your organization to inspire and inform, your contribution plays a vital role in empowering student learning and growth.
